Mixed Voice Vocal Exercise Arpeggio – Blending Registers – MALE

Vocal exercise for the male voice on an arpeggio. Learn how to blend register with this mixed voice exercise with piano accompaniment and tips and instructions on the screen. Arpeggios have multiple purposes. If you’re doing this exercise to blend register or smooth out your crack then follow the instructions. Blending registers means having an even tone with smooth transitions from the bottom to the top notes of the vocal range without the voice cracking of flipping into head voice. In other words going from chest to mix to head voice seamlessly.

Smooth transitions require a fine balance of volume and air pressure and heaps of practice. Air pressure is controlled by the abdominals and torso but is quite complex and I haven’t discussed it in this video.

Arpeggio’s usually cover two registers or passaggio areas, which make it a great exercise, it also means you’re using mixed voice. Start this exercise with moderately loud chest voice on the bottom notes. The top note should be lightened or sweeten to encourage a bit of head register into the mix.

As the exercise goes higher (around D4 – F4 for males) you may need to reduce the volume so you’re not pulling chest voice up and allowing the voice to shift into a mix. As you get even higher allow more head voice into the mix. This will help you stay in tune and not flip into head voice.
For the last few notes of the exercise you will probably need to be in pure head voice. That’s fine.

Cracking and flipping should not be seen as a bad sign but as an indicated for change and experimentation. Usually if the voice cracks, its means you’re singing too loud. Reducing the volume allows the voice or vocal folds to shift gears therefore, have smooth transitions.
Abdominals should not be tight or hard during singing they may be engaged but not tense.
